What are the 4 Levels of Competence?

Home – Blog
The 4 Levels of Competence is a model that describes the process of learning and acquiring new skills. The model was developed by Noel Burch, an employee at Gordon Training International, in the 1970s. The model consists of four levels that describe the different stages of learning, from being unaware of a skill to being able to perform it unconsciously. In this blog post, we will explore the 4 Levels of Competence (or 4 stages of learning) in detail and discuss their implications for personal and professional growth.

Level 1: Unconscious Incompetence.

This is the stage where a person is unaware of their lack of skill or knowledge. They may not even be aware that there is a skill to learn. At this stage, the person does not see the need for learning and may not be interested in acquiring the skill.

For example, a person who has never played a musical instrument may not be aware of the skill required to play one. They may not see the need for learning to play an instrument and may not be interested in doing so.

Level 2: Conscious Incompetence.

This is the stage where a person becomes aware of their lack of skill or knowledge. They realize that there is a skill to learn, but they do not yet possess it. At this stage, the person may feel overwhelmed or frustrated by their lack of ability.

Using the same example as before, a person who becomes interested in playing a musical instrument may start to realize that they lack the skill required to play one. They may feel frustrated or overwhelmed by the complexity of the task.

Level 3: Conscious Competence.

This is the stage where a person has learned the skill but must still consciously think about it to perform it correctly. They are able to perform the skill, but it requires concentration and effort.

Continuing with the example, a person who has learned to play a musical instrument may be able to play a few songs, but they still need to focus on the music and their technique to play correctly.

Level 4: Unconscious Competence.

This is the final stage is where a person has fully mastered the skill and can perform it without conscious effort or thought. The skill has become automatic and is integrated into their everyday life.

In our example, a person who has mastered playing a musical instrument can effortlessly play any song they choose without thinking about the mechanics of playing the instrument.

The 4 Levels of Competence have important implications for personal and professional growth. By understanding these stages, individuals can better identify where they are in the learning process and make a plan for moving forward. It also helps people to have patience and compassion for themselves when they are in the early stages of learning a new skill, as it takes time and effort to move from unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence.

In conclusion.

The 4 Levels of Competence provide a useful framework for understanding the process of learning and acquiring new skills. By recognizing the different stages, individuals can develop a growth mindset and approach new challenges with confidence and determination. Whether it is learning a new language, mastering a musical instrument, or developing a new professional skill, the 4 Levels of Competence offer a roadmap for success.

Further Thoughts.

It is important to note that the journey from unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence is not always a linear process. People may move back and forth between stages, depending on the complexity of the skill they are learning, their motivation, and the resources available to them.

While the 4 Levels of Competence are a useful tool for understanding the learning process, they are not the only model available. Other models, such as the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition, offer different perspectives on how people learn and acquire new skills.

Finally, it is important to remember that learning is a lifelong process, and there is always room for growth and improvement. By adopting a growth mindset and embracing the challenges of learning, individuals can achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
